Lasers in Dentistry
Lasers provide many advantages in dentistry. Among them:
No Needles- It is possible to do many procedures without having to numb
the tooth or area being worked on with an injection . In conventional treatment,
the spinning of the drill causes the tooth to heat up at an accelerated rate
causing pain. With the laser cavities are treated by *ablation (see "sterilization
while using"), and the action on the tooth is localized to the area being aimed
at. Not all procedures are ideal for laser treatment- in some instances it will
still be recommended to get you numb- and you can still request to be numbed
if ouy prefer.
Sterilization while using- By striking bacteria on the surface being aimed at,
the laser sterilizes the area while treating it. Lasers don't "cut" like conventional drills.
Instead, when the laser light strikes the surface the action is called "ablation". When
the tooth is ablated the light from the beam is absorbed by water molecules in the
tooth and causes them to come apart. When the water comes apart, the tooth
structure under the light beam comes apart as well. Bacteria on the surface of teeth
have even more water composition. When they are targeted by the laser, they will
come apart as well. As a result the surface becomes sterilized.
Better precision, conservation of tooth structure- The width of the light
beam from a laser is about half as thick as a conventional drill. It therefore removes
less residual healthy adjacent tooth structure while it effectively removes dental decay
compared to conventional drills. .
Decreased After-treatment Sensitivity- The manner in which lasers treat
cavities allows the filling materials to integrate more adequately into a tooth. This-
along with its sterilization properties- helps reduce the risk of sensitivity occurring
after fillings have been placed in.
Better Healing- When the laser is used for treatment of the soft tissues, the
treated areas heal faster and better than when used with conventional methods.
