Tooth-Colored Fillings
Over time silver fillings  wear and
deteriorate. Often the margin where the
filling borders the tooth becomes leaky.
This allows fluids, food, germs, and
particles to get under the fillings.
Despite the problems defective fillings
lead to, symptoms don't always occur.
The existing silver fillings are removed.
Any cavities beneath the fillings are
removed as well. Ideally the middle
dentin layer will be observed to have a
"banana yellow" color.  Often the area
will darken because of water that
contacts the inner silver. The longer a
cavity remains untreated, the darker
the dentin layer will become.
Tooth-colored fillings- called
composite- adhere to the teeth (unlike
silver) providing some reinforcement.
Studies show that the strength of
modern composites are comparable
with silver. As seen in this case the
margin where the filling ends and the
tooth begins is indistinguishable,
assuring the margins have been
sealed.
