Contemporary & Laser Dentistry
Facts about Whitening:
-"Whitening Laser Lights". The studies demonstrate that the so-called laser lights have minimal to no
effect on the outcome of whitening.
-The most important factors for successful whitening are
1: The concentration of the whitening gel
2. The amount of time the gel remains on the teeth (called "contact time").
After whitening
For best results it important to maintain the whitening with simple touch-up procedures. The best way
to minimize a reversion of the color is use of a custom bleaching tray about 10-20 minutes per night,
5-7 nights per week. The exact frequency is primarily the patient's prefernce. Some patients touch up
2-3 times per week, some do so every 1-2 weeks. Patients should be cautious not to excessively
whiten their teeth and should consult with the office before doing anything on their own.
Over the counter products
The studies show that so-called whitening rinses and toothpastes provide minimal to no appreciable
effect because:
1)They usually have very low concentration of whitening ingredients and
2) They contact the teeth for a very short time (on the order of 1-2 minutes).
Commercial strips have been demonstrated to get an appreciable effect because :
1) They remain on the teeth for a prolonged period,
2) They have a relatively higher concentration of whitening ingredient.
Diligent long-term use of the strips can produce an appreciable result.
